From the Interim Dean of the College
Language Academy students, welcome to Washington and Lee, Lexington, and beautiful Rockbridge County! We are so pleased with the infusion of culture and energy you bring to our idyllic campus. We love to overhear you speaking French, German, and Spanish. Don’t be surprised if passing faculty and students engage you in conversation. Warm thanks to Coordinator Dick Kuettner and his team for proposing and hosting the summer language academies at Washington and Lee.
Thomas Broadus Professor of English and Interim Dean of the College
From the Interim Provost of Washington and Lee University
Welcome to Washington and Lee! And please forgive my use of the English language in extending this greeting. In your weeks in Lexington you will hone your language skills and immerse yourselves in unique programs of cultural and intellectual enrichment. Please enjoy your time on our campus, and let us know, in whatever language you choose, how we can help you make the most of your Governor’s School experience.
From the Coordinator of the Full-Immersion Academies
One of Washington and Lee University’s most unique qualities is its academic competitiveness in a serene environment. At this tier-one institution, the students and faculty create the competitiveness; the staff, administration, and location provide the serenity. The common goal is superior achievement, which everyone is given opportunity to attain and in which the entire University community plays a role. As members of the Virginia Governor’s Language Academies for 2013, you will have many opportunities to encounter competitiveness, challenges, and serenity, while you achieve the many goals and objectives established by the superior faculty and staff.
Paul R. (Dick) Kuettner
